Experience is everything.
If you need a Plumber or Doctor, the choice is obvious – experience – but it is just the same with art and design, you need artists and designers that have done a wide range of work and have the experience to understand and appreciate your
requirements.

Notions by Design came into being in September 1988 as the art and graphic design studio of the internationally known David Charlesworth and separated the Commercial Art from The Fine Art.

David Charlesworth began drawing before he was three years old, started painting with oils when eight and completed his first commission when only twelve!Born in 1954, he is one of the few professional artists of his years with over 50 years continuous experience producing and selling paintings and illustrations for customers at home and abroad.

David started in the art and design industry before the introduction of computers and scanners. In those days graphic designers had to be able to draw and paint to get into the trade. This was also a time when artwork was created by hand with pencils, pens, brushes, airbrush and rulers.

One also had to be able to operate a Process Camera with carbon arc lamps and to process and develop film and bromides. It was a very interesting trade. Being an Artist Apprentice at that time also meant having to gain work experience in EVERY print department – typesetting, litho, letterpress, platemaking, carton design, magazine design, form setting and even the gumming department. Add to that a further ten years as a newspaper artist and copywriter, with 20 years editing magazines, and you have what can truly be called “experience”.

From computer graphics to advertising, public relations, conventional and computer illustrations, books, tea towels, signs, mugs and china plates, posters and even the side of Darjeeling Station in India, there is probably very little where his work has not appeared.

More than a job of work, there can be no doubt that design and art have to be a vocation.
